Biography

Walter “Bobby” McCoy is an award winning Washington DC-based music director, pianist, conductor, vocal coach, and educator.  They have been music directing for theater in the DC area for the past fifteen years, and has over one hundred and fifty productions to their credit.  Bobby has worked with several professional theatre organizations (Olney Theatre Center, GALA Hispanic Theatre, STAGES St. Louis, Arizona Theatre Company, Seacoast Repertory Theatre, Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre, The Mac-Haydn Theatre, Signature Theatre) as well as universities, schools, and community organizations. His work has been recognized with a number of awards including: The Helen Hayes Award, The St. Louis Theater Circle Award, DC Metro Theatre Arts, and BroadwayWorld.

Most notably, Bobby music directed and conducted Marcia Milgrom Dodge's groundbreaking Olney Theatre Center production of Beauty and the Beast in the DC area, starring actors Jade Jones and Evan Ruggerio. In the fall of 2022, Bobby served as the Music Coordinator on the Broadway bound Woolly Mammoth production of A Strange Loop (directed by Stephen Brackett and Music directed by Rona Siddiqui).

Bobby is a dedicated collaborator who places immense value on storytelling through music. The precision and technique required in musical performance are harnessed to effectively convey a narrative and establish connections with the audience and fellow performers. Bobby excels in all areas of expertise required for a music director, including audition accompaniment, vocal coaching for soloists and ensembles, choral directing, rehearsal accompaniment, pit orchestra conducting (keyboard or baton), pit orchestra contracting, orchestration and instrumentation, vocal arranging, and synthesizer programming. Additionally, Bobby possesses advanced skills with Finale and Sibelius, and has adeptly utilized Garage Band to produce audition and rehearsal accompaniment tracks, along with vocal training tracks.
